What is pool clarifier?
A pool clarifier is a chemical treatment that improves your pool filter's performance without requiring additional hands-on maintenance.
How does it work?
What, exactly, does a pool clarifier do to achieve crystal-clear water? It harnesses the powers of chemistry and coagulation. The polymers and natural compounds in these products carry charged ions that attract particles with the opposite electrical charge, such as dead algae, body oils, sunscreen residue, fine dirt, and other microscopic debris.
Are there different types of pool clarifiers?
Yes, there are several distinct types of pool clarifiers, including:

Polymer-based clarifiers: Most common type. Highly effective and widely available.

Natural/enzyme-based clarifiers: Gentler and eco-friendly, but often slower than polymer-based products.

Chitosan clarifiers: Natural and biodegradable clarifier derived from crustacean shells. Popular for saltwater pools and environmentally sensitive settings. Often sold as slow-release tablets.

Multi-action clarifiers: Combined with other chemicals to prevent other potential problems like scale and algae growth.
Pool clarifier vs flocculant
Both floc and pool clarifiers clump together microscopic particles in order to remove them, but these techniques require different disposal methods.
The debris formed by flocculant is larger and heavier, causing it to sink to the bottom of the pool. You must then vacuum up the waste from the floor to remove it. It’s fast, working overnight to clear severely cloudy or green water.
Clarifier is a low-maintenance alternative. The particles adhere in small clusters that remain in the water column until they’re processed through the filtration system. The tradeoff is that it’s relatively slow, taking around 48 hours to take effect. Additionally, it isn’t as effective for extremely cloudy water or excessive algae growth.

Improves water clarity
Enhancing water clarity is the most obvious benefit of pool clarifier. When microscopic debris accumulates in your pool, it scatters light and creates a hazy, milky appearance.
Helps the filter trap fine debris
Most pool filters are great at capturing larger debris, but struggle with tiny particles. For instance, here are the most popular types of filter media and the smallest items they’re able to catch:

Diatomaceous earth: 3 to 5 microns
Pool clarifiers coagulate debris into particles large enough to be captured by the filter. This makes it easier for your filtration system to catch microscopic particles that would otherwise pass right back into the pool. 
Supports the chlorine
Adding clarifier to your pool supports chlorine and other sanitizers by reducing chemical demand and improving UV penetration. By clumping and eliminating debris, clarifiers minimize the levels of organic compounds that chlorine must oxidize and neutralize. By making the water crisp and clear, clarifier also inhibits chlorine degradation caused by scattered light waves, enhancing the efficiency of chlorine and other chemicals.
How to use a pool clarifier
Once you buy a high-quality pool clarifier, you’ll need to use it correctly to reap the benefits. Here’s our step-by-step guide to improving clarity with pool clarifier:
1. Balance the water
Balanced water chemistry is essential for an effective clarifying treatment. Start by testing the water to ensure the following metrics are within the ideal range:

pH: 7.4 to 7.6

Alkalinity: 80 to 120 ppm

Chlorine: 1 to 3 ppm

Calcium hardness: 200 to 400 ppm
If readings show improper chlorine or pH levels, correct those first, then test again a few hours later. Only proceed with the clarifying treatment once the water is properly balanced.
2. Check the filter
Your pool’s filter is integral to a successful clarifying treatment. Before adding clarifyer, perform the following steps:

Check the pressure gauge: Readings of 8 to 10 psi above your normal baseline indicate that your filter is already struggling and needs to be cleaned.

Backwash or clean filter: Backwash sand and DE filters or brush and rinse cartridges to remove built-up debris that limits flow and efficiency.

Inspect for damage: Tears and cracks within the filtration system will allow particles to bypass the filter and go right back to your pool.
3. Apply the product
With balanced water chemistry and a clean filter, it’s time to add clarifier. Read the instructions on your specific chemical, then calculate the volume of your pool. Walk the perimeter, applying the product evenly throughout, or pour it near a return jet to ensure even distribution.
It’s best to add clarifier at dusk to prevent UV degradation. Avoid adding too much clarifier or using standalone clarifiers alongside other chemical treatments.
4. Run the pump
Turn on your pump and allow it to circulate water for 24 to 48 hours. It’s best to avoid swimming for a few hours after application. Don’t apply other chemicals during this time.
You should begin to notice better water quality within 12 to 24 hours, but it might take the full 48 hours or a second treatment 5 to 7 days after the initial dose.
5. Clean or backwash the filter
After your pool clarifier works its magic, you’ll want to see just how much gunk it pulled from your water. Clean or backwash your filter to prevent buildup that may slow water flow and increase pressure.
