What is pool ionizer?

How it works
Electrolysis is the driving force behind pool ionization. A low-voltage current is passed through a copper or silver anode, causing the metal to slowly release positively charged ions into the water. The negatively charged cell walls of algae, bacteria, and other microorganisms attract those ions, which penetrate their protective layers, killing them on contact.
In most cases, it’s still important to add a small amount of chlorine to your pool regularly. However, pool ionizers dramatically reduce the required chemical load.
Pros and cons
A pool ionizer can slash chlorine use by 50% to 80%, resulting in cleaner, softer water that’s less irritating to the eyes and skin. The ions released degrade more slowly than chlorine for longer-lasting protection and lower chemical costs. These systems are also gentler on swimwear, pool equipment, and the environment than heavy chlorine use.
However, the initial price of an ionizer installation can be high, and this device doesn’t oxidize organic matter, so it isn’t a great standalone sanitizer solution. You still need to test and balance water chemistry regularly, and occasional shock treatments may be needed. Certain surfaces, such as fiberglass, may stain if copper levels are not carefully monitored.
